Hawawshi is one of Egypt’s great street foods: a round of flatbread packed with spiced minced meat — often with onion, pepper, and chili — then baked or griddled until the bread crisps and the filling sears. Ours adds soujouk for an extra spiced kick.
Minced beef is seasoned with onion, parsley, pepper, and chili, stuffed into flatbread, and baked until the outside is crackly and the meat is juicy inside. It’s the Egyptian answer to a stuffed, handheld meat pie.
We stuff ours with seasoned meat and soujouk — the spiced Egyptian sausage — and bake it until crisp. It’s a halal, hot-and-spicy pick that travels well, which makes it a favorite for late-night and lunch-break orders.
